What Are Offshore Funds?
Literally, offshore means off or away from the shore. In the case of mutual funds, offshore translates as organized, administered or domiciled outside the United States in a tax-friendly jurisdiction; these locations may be landlocked or island locales. There are many areas of the world that are considered primary offshore centers including Luxembourg, Dublin and Bermuda. These low tax-haven locations are especially investor-friendly and are internationally regarded as the predominant, and most secure, financial sectors in the world.
Offshore mutual funds are registered outside the United States under the laws of foreign countries. These funds are not subjected to. U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission regulations. Why do individuals and corporations invest in offshore funds? Overall, investors seek greater freedom than is possible onshore. Offshore offers eligible investors significant tax benefits not available with U.S. - registered funds. Offshore funds cannot be sold or distributed within the United States to any United States citizen.

Eligibility Requirements
Most nonresident aliens (NRAs) are eligible investors. These are individuals who are both non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. residents and who are generally present in the United States fewer than 180 days a year. |
Tax / Privacy Advantages
Because offshore funds are not registered in the United States or with the Securities & Exchange Commission, they offer privacy benefits and a variety of tax advantages. They are not subject to U.S. income or withholding taxes on distributions received from the fund or to U.S. estate taxes on fund shares. Offshore funds are exempt from withholding taxes because the funds are located outside the U.S. and, therefore, are not required to submit W-8 forms for interest and dividend income earned by the securities. It is the responsibility of the investor to report any potential tax implications from their investments to the appropriate governing body. |

Mutual funds invest in many different securities; they can provide a greater degree of protection against loss of principal than an investment in one specific issue. Within a well-diversified portfolio, the overall value of the portfolio should not be dramatically affected by any one stock.
